From being a sedentary bookworm to becoming one of the first to complete last year’s 12 Gifts of X’mas challenge, this sweetheart shares more about overcoming fitness intimidation and finding her happy place at the barre!

How did you get hooked on to WeBarre?

I was looking for an exercise that would strengthen and tone, and that’s how I discovered WeBarre! I’ve done pilates and yoga, and while I do like them, I felt it wasn’t exactly for me. That’s when my colleagues suggested for me to try out barre classes! After some Googling, I found myself at WeBarre Telok Ayer Studio on a fine weekend with the kindest Peiqi showing me around. My first class was with Sophie and she was a delight! I was initially afraid of being intimidated, but the genuine hospitality and encouragement from the folks at WeBarre was what kept me going and eventually hooked! I love the classes as there are always alternatives offered to cater to people from all levels. The locations, timing and class sizes are also perfect!

What was the hardest part of the 12 Gifts of X’mas Challenge?

If I have to pick a class as the biggest challenge, then it will definitely be WeBarre HIIT. I was terrified! I’ve been relatively inactive for the past 9 years and the only classes I took were the Fundamentals and S&T (which I love!). The idea of having to complete HIIT classes was a challenge to step out of my comfort zone! That being said, I’m a challenge-driven person, so I was up for it! What helped was Tina (a fellow barre-dy that I met at WeBarre), and instructors Sarah and Joie’s encouragement! I felt really empowered at the end, and am extremely thankful for this Christmas Challenge for I would not have attempted a HIIT class if not for it. After all, sore is the best pain, right?

Did any aspect of your health improve since making WeBarre a part of your fitness journey?

Definitely! In fact, this is one of the biggest reason why WeBarre is my happy place! Growing physically stronger was a plus, but what’s even better is the mental strength honed. I’m talking about about having stronger willpower, determination and positivity here, and these are incredible takeaways. Making WeBarre a regular habit in my life was one of my best 2019 decisions! The lunch time classes are a great way to relieve work stress, and the weekend classes are perfect for unwinding. It’s amazing to know that whenever I step out of a WeBarre studio, I’m a better and stronger version of myself, and that’s priceless.

I’m currently working in wealth management. When I’m not working, I’m usually indulging in creative writing, or enjoying a good read over coffee – particularly after a good WeBarre class!
