If your 2022 resolution is to start taking more WeBarre classes, here’s your inspiration! Sarah Suah is the definition of a WeBarre Addict – she attends classes in-studio 6 days a week. Read on to learn more about how she built up her strength and endurance, and all the benefits she has gained along the way!

When did you start doing these almost daily classes, and why did you decide to do it?

The first time I tried doing daily WeBarre classes in-studio was in April this year, when I got the Monthly Unlimited pack! That period of time fell in between gym closures, and I was quite free then so I figured why not!

I’d been doing virtual classes quite frequently for some time by then, and while I feel that WeBarre really has the best virtual classes, it definitely makes a difference to have your instructors and peers physically present alongside you in-studio.

My rationale was that if the unlimited pack allows me to do daily classes, why not take full advantage of it? I also love the endorphin rush that comes with working out! This time round I purchased the 3-Month Unlimited pack during the year-end promotion, which is why WeBarre has pretty much become my second home over the past month and a half!

Don’t you get exhausted taking so many classes? How do you get your rest?

I think my body has just gotten accustomed to being so active that I don’t need quite as much recovery as I used to! On top of Barre I also do a mix of boxing, HIIT and strength training pretty often, so in that sense the WeBarre Fundamentals classes have become more of an active recovery for me!

This works really well for me especially because I otherwise get pretty restless on rest days; I definitely still feel the burn during each session, but even then it’s not too crazy intense. That said, it’s always important to listen to your body, so I make sure to take the lower-impact options or easier modifications where needed.

Are there times where you feel like you lack motivation to come for classes?

While I’d love to be able to share helpful tips on overcoming workout inertia, I actually can’t remember the last time I didn’t feel motivated to go for class! From the time I attended my first WeBarre class back in 2019, I remember having such a good experience that I subsequently found myself always being really excited to go for classes. It was very much a mindset shift where exercise went from a chore to a fun thing to do!

More importantly though, amidst the numerous gym closures over the past two years, you realize how much of a privilege it is to be able to work out in-studio. It’s so great to have instructors be physically present to encourage you and correct your form, and that in-person interaction really can’t be replaced with virtual alternatives. So I guess knowing the value of being able to go for something that I enjoy is a big motivator!

What advice can you give people who are daunted by the idea of working out and coming to barre classes almost every day?

I remember the first time I did consecutive days of WeBarre classes – I’d “panic booked in” right before the first lockdown in 2020! At the time my muscles were definitely a little sore, but it was my last chance to go for studio classes for a while, to which instructor Novia said, “That’s how you get stronger! You keep going even when it hurts!” (Turns out my advice still comes from WeBarre haha!)

While you certainly want to rest any injuries, when it comes to muscle soreness I’ve found that the body adapts incredibly quickly to working out, such that after a while it just takes everything in its stride! It’s a good idea to progressively increase the frequency and intensity of your workouts safely so as to build up a routine where you can stay active in a sustainable manner. Once that habit is formed, you’d really be surprised at how much you’re capable of and how strong you can get if you step out of your comfort zone!

The English Premier League has their WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends of the celebrity footballers), and WeBarre has our HABs – the supportive Husbands and Boyfriends of our awesome community!

Meet Ivan, who went from encouraging his wife from the sidelines, to becoming a bona fide Barre hero! Often seen earnestly plié-ing and pulsing by Aileen’s side in our studios, Ivan also attends classes on his own or with his guy friends.

Ivan and Aileen at the Barre!

Tell us about how you started your WeBarre journey!

I heard of Barre through my wife, Aileen. She had been going since we were pregnant with our first daughter who is now five years old. I was always encouraging of her to go, but had never thought of going myself until a couple of years back when I decided to try it out with one of my good friends. We started with the trial package and have not looked back since!

Were you always very active?

Before I started going to WeBarre, my favorite sports to play were tennis or touch football, but they were sometimes hard to arrange with friends, while having to book courts or finding fields to play in was always a hassle.

To stay in shape I would just run on the treadmill or go mountain biking outside, but I didn’t really push myself too much. Going to class and having instructors push me to progress has been a lot more encouraging when seeing the results to my fitness.

Attending a WeBarre Outdoors session with friends.

What’s it like going to classes as a man?

It’s always been fun coming to Barre claases, no matter if it’s only with a few good men, or with a group of girls. I started with a mate who is also male, and we were great there as supports for each other, especially when we couldn’t keep up with the girls in the class!

After a while, I also managed to pull along other guys and it’s always great to hit a class together. But even when it’s just me going solo, I just get in my zone and try to push myself as much as I can.

It can be a bit weird sometimes when the instructors yell out to “all the girls” or to “come on ladies”, but I’m always happy to be included in the fun!

How has Barre helped you in your training and fitness?

WeBarre has been great in helping me work on all those muscle groups, as well as mobility and strength. These facets of fitness aren’t directly addressed through my other workouts.

I’m getting more into spinning now as well. I feel that the balance of spin and Barre have given me the ability to have a more holistic exercise routine and work on different muscles to give myself rest days in between.

Ivan and Aileen attending the Halloween HIIT class at WeBarre Clarke Quay.

Should more men do Barre?

Absolutely. I would definitely encourage more guys to come to a WeBarre workout. It’s not for everyone, but then again, what exercise is? But I definitely would advise the guys not to be put off by any preconceptions of the class.

It’s always a friendly bunch, no matter whether it’s the guys or girls, and it’s always a great refreshing workout that I look forward to – especially the feeling when we are stretching after a tough class together!

By Joie Goh

If you’re a regular at WeBarre, you might’ve caught BFFs Ain and Ashikin attending classes together, often twinning in matching WeBarre outfits! Here, they share more about how attending classes together has deepened their decade-long friendship.

First Spark of Friendship

According to Ain and Ashikin, their first meeting was back in junior college, during a school competition.

“I met her in the toilet!” Ashikin recalls. “Like, the first time I met her was in the toilet!”

That one chance meeting has since matured into a deep friendship that has lasted more than 10 years.

Their WeBarre Journey Together

Ashikin started going to WeBarre after she gave birth, and attended a WeBarre Mums & Bubs class with her daughter Aishah.

“And I loved it! It was love at first barre,” she says. “And so then I got back and I told all my friends, oh my God! You have to start trying this thing! It’s new, it’s interesting. It’s not Pilates, it’s more than that.”

Ain was attending Pilates classes and boxing, and took Ashikin up on her offer. They began attending classes on Wednesdays at 5:45pm at Telok Ayer, and never stopped.

When the pandemic happened, they immediately switched to taking WeBarre Virtual classes because they wanted to keep up with their fitness journey once studios had reopened again.

“I guess with the virtual classes, it was a little easier for us to exercise, right,” Ain explains. “You just need to switch on your laptop.”

“Circuit breaker was when we saw each other everyday for WeBarre Virtual!” Ashikin adds.

Barre-dy Highlights

Last year, Ain contemplated attending the WeBarre Instructor Training.

“I was like, do I want to go for the training? Should I? Should I?” Ain says. “And Ashikin was like, ‘DO IT! It’s the best thing you will do for yourself this year!’”

When Ain completed her training, Ashikin was one of her first attendees at her Friends & Family class.

“According to Gretel, I was quite an ‘auntie’,” Ain confesses self-deprecatingly.

“It wasn’t the ‘clubbing’ Barre session for me,” Ashikin continues, laughing. “But so that Ain wouldn’t be embarrassed, I made sure that the two weeks before, I kept consistently going for Barre and making sure my form was on par!”

For the besties, their barre-dy friendship can be described as Ashikin always pushing Ain to take her Barre practice a step further, while Ain was encouraging Ashikin to stay consistent in her fitness journey.

A Barre-dy Retreat

“I attended the retreat in 2019 to Maldives and I really wanted Shikin to come down with me, but it was not meant to be,” Ain recalls.

“That’s right, because my daughter was 2 at that time and I couldn’t leave her,” Ashikin adds. “That’s why I didn’t go to Maldives with her, and to be honest, it was my biggest regret of my whole WeBarre journey!”

So, in July 2021, when WeBarre launched its first-ever WeBarre Retreat locally at W Singapore, the BFFs decided that they absolutely had to attend it together.

From left: Ain, instructor Joie, Ashikin.

“It really strengthened our friendship because when you ‘travel’ with another person, you’re stuck with them for 24/7 right?” Ashikin says. “And we didn’t drive each other crazy!”

Accountability Barre-dies

“I speak for the both of us when I say this: we probably wouldn’t be as consistent and wouldn’t go for Barre as often because we don’t have someone keeping us accountable, or cheering us on,” Ain says.

And it truly shows! The pair divulged that they share account details so that one or the other could help each other book for classes at noon, when the schedule is released, so they wouldn’t end up waitlisted for their favorite classes.

“Also I get quite comfortable when I’m exercising, but Ain is always pushing me to take the heavier weights or the more challenging options!” Ashikin adds.

Advice For Newbies

“Find a barre-dy!” Ashikin declares. “Find a barre-dy who encourages you, and who’s always there to keep cheering you on.”

By Joie Goh

Fact: #barreburn is best experienced when it’s shared! Sit down with our WeBarre Virtual superstars Alicja & Priscillia, as they tell us about how logging in for their daily at-home Barre sessions led to their newly-forged bond as barre-dy besties.

How did you two meet and become friends?

Alicja & Pris: It all started on WeBarre Virtual. From what we can recall, a few of us would tend to stay back for the “after class chitchat” with the instructor. It was a natural progression from there. We don’t even remember how and when it happened. We were chatting on IG and ta-dah here we are today: from barre to the bar!

Clockwise from top left: Alicja, instructor Cherisa, Priscillia.

What are some highlights of your barre-dy friendship?

Alicja & Pris: We definitely have some wonderful and memorable moments. We timed & clocked our 500th class together (a very special one that coincided with Linda’s final class for a while). Excited to be getting stronger together and celebrating milestone achievements. We also completed 2 WeBarre On-Demand challenges. Another fun highlight of our barre-dy friendship was the recent WeBarre Retreat in October – we had only met in-person once or twice when we decided to share a room. Happy to be bestie barre-dies.

Winning the best dressed as twin black swans at the WeBarre Retreat!

Do you plan to attend classes together beforehand, or book in on your own and end up in classes together coincidentally?

Alicja & Pris: We know each others’ schedules and which classes the other one is doing. When Pris doesn’t have to be in the office, we tend to end up doing the same ones. Of course, there will be some days where we plan to attend classes beforehand, especially when we know that those days could be tougher and we want to be supportive.

Hanging out together outside of the barre.

Do you think your WeBarre journey would be different if you didn’t have your barredy? How would it be different?

Alicja & Pris: It’s simply nice to see same people come back over and over again. We get stronger together. The common factor is WeBarre; the rest is up to us. We definitely are looking forward to meeting up with a few other ladies after the New Year!

By Joie Goh

Reaching your 500 class milestone at WeBarre is no easy feat. But for Melissa Lim, another goal was in sight – getting to 500 classes by her 50th birthday! Here’s her inspiring story, and why when it comes to barre, age is just a number.

A familiar face at the barre, Melissa doesn’t fit the mold of what you think a “barre body” is. But, her confidence and ever-positive attitude shines in everything that she does! Looking at her, you might never think that she was the complete opposite when she first stepped into WeBarre.

“I was so intimidated when I came in for my first class!” Melissa says, laughing. “Everyone was so slim, and toned, and sculpted. And here I was, bigger-sized, older, and have not exercised at all!”

The year was 2017 and Melissa was 46. Staying healthy and fit became a priority for her, so upon the recommendation of a friend, she decided to try out WeBarre. “Wow, after the first trial class, I ached for the next 2-3 days!” she reminisced. “In the end, I could only do 2 classes during the trial period.”

In fact, even going back for the 2nd trial class almost didn’t happen. “I used to have a very negative body image,” Melissa says. “I tend to see my body as bigger than it really is, and after comparing myself to everyone else at the studio, I really didn’t want to come back.”

A Hidden Hero

Her push to return to the barre came from someone dearest to her – her husband. When he saw Melissa defeated after her first class at WeBarre, he gave her the encouragement and support she needed.

“My husband reminded me that all bodies are different,” she says. “He told me not to give up so quickly and to go back and try again. After all, I really did enjoy my time in the studio – even though the instructors were all so slim and good at barre, they were so encouraging. I’m really thankful.”

Diligently showing up at the barre eventually led to self-acceptance. “My body image is my personal challenge that I knew I had to overcome,” Melissa says. “I started to accept myself and to love my body, and when I did, I began to see the physical changes in me. And it’s all WeBarre – I don’t do any other form of exercise!”

The Power of Barre-dies

Another factor that Melissa credits for keeping her going is making friends at the barre. “The more I came for classes, the more I got to know others who also come to WeBarre, and I became quite close to some of them,” Melissa says. “We actually have a chat group to keep each other accountable!”

In this chat group, Melissa and her barre-dies would tell each other when they would be attending classes. By announcing that they have signed up for a class, it makes them less inclined to cancel at the last minute, explains Melissa.

A Sense of Accomplishment

Still, the biggest factor to her 500-class success comes from within. “The moment I step into the studio after a hard day of work, everything flies away and once the class is over, I feel so good for completing that one hour,” Melissa says. “It’s wonderful!”

It’s also this feeling of pride that Melissa says is unbeatable. “If anyone tells me that they are too old, too unfit to do barre, I’ll tell them: look at me!” she says, beaming with self-esteem. “If I, at 50 years old and not the fittest person, could do this 500 times and counting, well, so can you!”

Back then, I had just moved to Singapore for work and was visiting different fitness studios as a way to explore. I tried out WeBarre for the first time a couple weeks after I moved. Everyone was super welcoming!

I distinctly remembered (then-instructor) Elisa was telling us to slide the gliders as if we were cleaning our homes, and I really liked how engaging the class was! After that I decided to get the trial pack, then moved up to the monthly unlimited, and now the 3-month unlimited!

Instead of memories, when I think of WeBarre, I think about the friendships I’ve made. When you move to a new country and don’t really know anyone, it can be very exciting but at the same time quite lonely. Everytime I walk into WeBarre, everyone is always smiling. And this sounds silly, but when I’ve had a long day at work and an instructor says ‘good job’ during class, it reminds me that my life is not only about work. Who I am is not defined by work – and I think it’s an important reminder to a lot of us!

Two years ago, I joined the instructor training without the intention to become an instructor. At the time I was hosting a lot of meetings and webinars at work. Therefore I wanted to be more confident and articulate myself better. So I thought instructor training would be a great way to combine my personal goal of boosting confidence, and actually learn what goes into creating a barre class! I really enjoyed the process and how we got to conduct our own classes.

I tend to forget to enjoy what is in front of me. Sometimes at the barre, I would be itching to check for replies on my phone. On reflection, I realise these moments would never come again. So, instead of hoping it would go by faster, I make the best of what I can and try to learn from everything I’m doing. It’s still work in progress, but I’m definitely enjoying life more with this new mindset!

Shu Xian: Place for Growth

Left: Shu Xian in 2016 at WeBarre Tanjong Pagar. Right: Shu Xian in 2020 in a WeBarre virtual class.

I was looking to return to fitness back in 2016 and tried a variety of activities. I came across a Yahoo! article featuring barre and one of the places they mentioned was WeBarre! I decided to try it out and as it turns out, the workouts were exactly what I was looking for.

WeBarre allows me to relive my childhood ballet days and and I enjoy the burn that comes with it. I love how it is a full body workout and I’m maximising my time spent in class every time. So I signed on with the unlimited package after trials and haven’t looked back since.

I have so many fond memories from the last 5 years! There’s the friendships formed both with fellow WeBarre-ers and instructors. Also, Anabel’s “Be brave!” will always ring in my head whenever I’m doing something difficult or scary. She says that to us all the time during HIIT! No matter how exhausted I am at the end of the day, I’d drag myself to class and feel so much better after. I’m thankful for the space that WeBarre has given me to grow, to be at peace, and get my sweat fix all at the same time.

I am definitely at my fittest since 5 years ago. The good vibes and positivity that WeBarre has always exuded has reminded me to take care of myself and be kind to myself. I pulled myself out of a nasty situation some time back and things have been rough over the last year or so, but WeBarre is my happy space and the constant in my life which I continue to be grateful for everyday.

My outlook on things have evolved and matured significantly, and my mental health is a lot better. This in turn translated to my physical health as well. I have learnt to trust myself a lot more these days, and learnt to always live and lead with kindness.

Aileen: 5 Years and 3 Kids Later

Left: Aileen in 2016, 1 month after the birth of her 1st child. Right: Aileen in 2021, 1 month after the birth of her 3rd child!

In 2016, I was pregnant with my first child. I wanted to stay active throughout my pregnancy, so I was looking for a barre studio. Barre was introduced to me by a friend in Hong Kong where I used to stay, but I never had the chance to try it. However, there weren’t many barre studios in Singapore at that time. So when WeBarre started, I jumped at the opportunity to try it out. And the rest they say, is history.

The WeBarre community is my happy place! I’ve made so many friends through WeBarre. Barre is something that has kept us together and the friends I made here is what keeps me coming back.

WeBarre has accompanied me throughout my motherhood journey. It has seen me through 3 kids under 5! Yep, I’ve done barre throughout all my 3 pregnancies – each from the 2nd trimester to end of 3rd trimester. It’s one of the most important things that has kept me energetic and radiant throughout my pregnancies and has definitely helped recovery postpartum. I’ve just given birth to my 3rd child 2 months ago and have been back on the mat from 6 weeks!

Outside of WeBarre, the biggest thing about my personal growth is adopting a more active approach to staying fit. Exercise is not in my DNA but I’m consciously trying to make it a part of my lifestyle. Barre is honestly the only workout that I’ve been faithful to!

In our second part of the OG instructors series, the next two longest-standing instructors share about their own growth and milestones over the last 5 years.

Shaan

Left: Shaan in 2016. Right: Shaan in 2021.

Barre was new in the fitness scene in Singapore in 2016, with only a few studios offering barre classes. I was just starting my own fitness journey at that time, and WeBarre was the first studio I tried barre at. Coming from a ballet background, I fell in love with barre instantly. I left my first class (with Anabel!) shaking and unable to walk down the stairs at Tanjong Pagar. It was unlike anything I had ever tried!

Being the only boutique barre studio in Singapore at that time, it was a no brainer to choose WeBarre when it came to my barre teaching journey. I started out with zero instructor background! For sure, I have become much more confident in leading a class, giving clear instructions and thinking of creative sequences. With every year, I have become more comfortable and truly feel like I enjoy teaching each class. I always leave feeling happier than when I came in!

I usually don’t set personal milestones, but rather, see things as a journey of continuous development. Over the past 5 years with WeBarre, what I feel I have really improved in is my confidence. Like, being in front of a group of adults and dealing with difficult situations. I have also become much fitter than I would have imagined myself to be 5 years ago, but I know there’s still much more to improve on.

When I look back on my previous self year after year, it makes me happy that I have progressed in many ways and form.

Joie

Left: Joie in 2016. Right: Joie in 2021.

The first time I stepped into WeBarre, it was for a piece I was writing for a fashion magazine about how fitness was becoming “trendy”. I haven’t exercised in years (I was the kid that would fake illness to get out of PE class), but having had ballet training I thought it would be easy.

The WeBarre Signature Multi-level class kicked my butt! I had to hold on to the wall as I shakily made my home. But I was not one to back down from a challenge, so I came back for more. Don’t we all? I ended up taking 3 classes a week and each time I left feeling stronger. Plus, my butt was looking better and better in leggings.

When I learned that WeBarre was looking for more instructors, I jumped at the chance. I had no instructor or fitness background, but I loved the workout and the community and wanted to be a bigger part of it! I remember feeling intimidated during the training – although I had made it through the auditions, everyone else (including Shaan) looked so fit and had such graceful lines!

Over the last 5 years, so much had happened in my life and WeBarre was the one constant. I left journalism and joined WeBarre full time as an instructor and brand communications manager. I went from teaching 4 classes a week to 13 classes! WeBarre went from being “just a studio” and became my home and family.

It’s crazy how I had simply wanted to be a bigger part of the WeBarre community in 2016. Fast forward to 2021, I’m the one behind the scenes, growing and engaging the community that I had loved since the beginning! I’ve always wanted to advocate for what I believed in, and I believe in all of us here at WeBarre. I’m living my dream!

One of our ongoing resolutions at WeBarre is to embrace a sustainable lifestyle today where we minimise our impact on Mother Earth. Here are 6 little steps we’ve been taking towards sustaining a cleaner, greener planet!

1. Stocking up with Bare Eco Water

No more plastic bottles! Some of you might have noticed we now stock our fridges with these 100% recyclable and repurposable Eco boxed water. They are chic and thoughtfully packed with Eco materials. What’s more, for every purchase, CloverSoft donates a portion of the sales proceeds to save the polar bears.

2. Taps with installed OSIM water filter

On top of selling sustainable water, did you know our taps also double up as purified water dispensers? If you bring your own bottle (or purchase one of our stylish glass water bottles), simply switch the tap option to the filtered water option and fill up from our taps. One step closer to Zero Waste!

3. Using biodegradable trash bags

While these Biogreen biodegradable trash bags cost a little more than regular plastic bags, we believe that little efforts to reduce our carbon footprint go a long way! Rather than adding on to the pile of waste, Biogreen trash bags will break down completely and ultimately leave no trace on our beautiful Mother Earth.

4. Switching to 100% biodegradable coconut shot cups

Refreshing yourself with a shot of electrolyte-rich coconut water after an intense class is an experience in itself! However, the little plastic cups undoubtedly add to unnecessary waste. We’ve specially customized the biodegradable cups out of a plant-based wax layer, allowing it to be compostable within 90 days!

*In view of the current situation, we have temporarily suspended serving post-class coco shots.

5. Handing over old towels to families and hawker stalls

We change up our towels every so often to ensure good hygiene and quality – only the best for our WeBarrers! Ever wondered what happens to our old towels when we bring in fresh new ones? We donate these towels towards textile recycling, where collected recyclables are sold to second hand textile importers in developing countries.

We also reach out to individuals from our community who might have the use for these towels, and hand them over so they can be reused and repurposed. The recent batch of old towels from our Telok Ayer studio have been handed over to be shared among a few families as well as their hawker business.

6. Eco-friendly WeBarre merchandise

That’s right! Our WeBarre apparel line is moving towards using sustainable fabrics like bamboo rayon. They are also manufactured responsibly with as little impact to the environment as possible. Look great and feel good when you slip on a WeBarre tank or leggings!

7. Supporting local recycling efforts

Starting this 2021, we are proud to partner with local contact lenses subscription service Two of a Kind for Project 2×2 as a advocate location! Daily lenses are undoubtedly convenient, hygienic and safer for your eyes, but the waste from the blister containers do add up. Project 2×2 collects used plastic blisters from all contact lens brands (not just from Two of a Kind!) and recycles them into raw material.

You’ll find Project 2×2 collection bins at all our studios. Just bring your used lens blisters and drop them off when you come for your workout!

We truly believe that sustainability doesn’t require giving up every luxury or convenience. It could be as simple as caring a little more for our environment, starting by taking small steps to adjust to our daily habits! Finding ways to be more sustainable in our everyday life here at WeBarre is a great way to start — and what better way to do so than with our biggest cheerleaders, YOU!

We’re turning 5! And for our OG instructors, this year also marks 5 years of teaching with WeBarre. Here, two instructors from the original batch share their stories of personal growth.

Meaghan

Left: Meaghan in 2015, after her Friends & Family class.

I made the decision to join the fledgling WeBarre instructor team back in 2015 before it even opened at Tanjong Pagar, due to the love for barre since the first barre class I attended when I was studying in California. Plus, there’s the trust I had (and still have) for Linda and Anabel to establish a well-loved and respected brand!

After five years as a WeBarre instructor, I think I’ve become more confident in executing classes! It’s really important to me that clients get what they come for every time they step into the studio. I’ve also become better in altering a class plan I have in mind while teaching a class to cater for what I think clients in my class want!

I’ve also achieved several personal milestones thanks to WeBarre. I ran 3 half marathons and improved my timings at each subsequent one – the physical training of WeBarre has contributed to the strength I’ve built. I hope to get a decent time in the full marathon I’ve registered for this year!

Being a WeBarre instructor has also made me want to be a better fitness instructor. It definitely nudged me towards attaining the NCSF Personal Training Certification.

The confidence I’ve built in being a WeBarre instructor has carried itself into my daily life, whether it’s at my day job or as an indoor cycling instructor. This will follow me as I pursue future endeavours and I’ve WeBarre to thank for contributing to this!

Suwan

Left: Suwan in 2016, at WeBarre’s launch party. Right: Suwan in 2021.

I had been dancing for over 10 years and also spent 9 months in 2012 at a dance school in New York. It was a personal challenge to see how far I could take this passion. Then I came back to Singapore and plunged straight into the workforce. I didn’t dance for a good 3 years, and I missed it a lot!

When Linda approached me to be part of the first team of trainers, it was the perfect opportunity to get back into something I had loved, and develop a new skill.

However, unlike the others in the first instructor batch, I had no prior experience in instructing at all. I honestly struggled with cues for the longest time. I was just so used to dancing without speaking! In the end, I had to do many Friends & Family classes to gain confidence and get used to it. Now, 5 years later I’m happy to say I don’t have any jitters. I can fully enjoy the experience of being present with our clients.

Given the fast pace of my life, being disciplined, present and having better time management are things that I’ve had to work on. Before teaching at WeBarre, my own fitness journey was really ad-hoc. I would frequently cancel classes if I had to work overtime. Teaching meant that I had to be at the studio for 4-6 classes per week, and be present regardless of what happened earlier in the day. We always say to clients: “Leave all stress, worries and distractions outside before stepping into the studio.” It applies to us as well!

Being a 100% extrovert, I’ve also always enjoyed the community aspect of WeBarre. Having taught for 5 years, it’s extremely heartening to see the same faces still coming to the studio. It’s definitely a milestone to have maintained these relationships over the years. Whatever good things we build, end up building us!
