If your 2022 resolution is to start taking more WeBarre classes, here’s your inspiration! Sarah Suah is the definition of a WeBarre Addict – she attends classes in-studio 6 days a week. Read on to learn more about how she built up her strength and endurance, and all the benefits she has gained along the way!

When did you start doing these almost daily classes, and why did you decide to do it?

The first time I tried doing daily WeBarre classes in-studio was in April this year, when I got the Monthly Unlimited pack! That period of time fell in between gym closures, and I was quite free then so I figured why not!

I’d been doing virtual classes quite frequently for some time by then, and while I feel that WeBarre really has the best virtual classes, it definitely makes a difference to have your instructors and peers physically present alongside you in-studio.

My rationale was that if the unlimited pack allows me to do daily classes, why not take full advantage of it? I also love the endorphin rush that comes with working out! This time round I purchased the 3-Month Unlimited pack during the year-end promotion, which is why WeBarre has pretty much become my second home over the past month and a half!

Don’t you get exhausted taking so many classes? How do you get your rest?

I think my body has just gotten accustomed to being so active that I don’t need quite as much recovery as I used to! On top of Barre I also do a mix of boxing, HIIT and strength training pretty often, so in that sense the WeBarre Fundamentals classes have become more of an active recovery for me!

This works really well for me especially because I otherwise get pretty restless on rest days; I definitely still feel the burn during each session, but even then it’s not too crazy intense. That said, it’s always important to listen to your body, so I make sure to take the lower-impact options or easier modifications where needed.

Are there times where you feel like you lack motivation to come for classes?

While I’d love to be able to share helpful tips on overcoming workout inertia, I actually can’t remember the last time I didn’t feel motivated to go for class! From the time I attended my first WeBarre class back in 2019, I remember having such a good experience that I subsequently found myself always being really excited to go for classes. It was very much a mindset shift where exercise went from a chore to a fun thing to do!

More importantly though, amidst the numerous gym closures over the past two years, you realize how much of a privilege it is to be able to work out in-studio. It’s so great to have instructors be physically present to encourage you and correct your form, and that in-person interaction really can’t be replaced with virtual alternatives. So I guess knowing the value of being able to go for something that I enjoy is a big motivator!

What advice can you give people who are daunted by the idea of working out and coming to barre classes almost every day?

I remember the first time I did consecutive days of WeBarre classes – I’d “panic booked in” right before the first lockdown in 2020! At the time my muscles were definitely a little sore, but it was my last chance to go for studio classes for a while, to which instructor Novia said, “That’s how you get stronger! You keep going even when it hurts!” (Turns out my advice still comes from WeBarre haha!)

While you certainly want to rest any injuries, when it comes to muscle soreness I’ve found that the body adapts incredibly quickly to working out, such that after a while it just takes everything in its stride! It’s a good idea to progressively increase the frequency and intensity of your workouts safely so as to build up a routine where you can stay active in a sustainable manner. Once that habit is formed, you’d really be surprised at how much you’re capable of and how strong you can get if you step out of your comfort zone!

The English Premier League has their WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends of the celebrity footballers), and WeBarre has our HABs – the supportive Husbands and Boyfriends of our awesome community!

Meet Ivan, who went from encouraging his wife from the sidelines, to becoming a bona fide Barre hero! Often seen earnestly plié-ing and pulsing by Aileen’s side in our studios, Ivan also attends classes on his own or with his guy friends.

Ivan and Aileen at the Barre!

Tell us about how you started your WeBarre journey!

I heard of Barre through my wife, Aileen. She had been going since we were pregnant with our first daughter who is now five years old. I was always encouraging of her to go, but had never thought of going myself until a couple of years back when I decided to try it out with one of my good friends. We started with the trial package and have not looked back since!

Were you always very active?

Before I started going to WeBarre, my favorite sports to play were tennis or touch football, but they were sometimes hard to arrange with friends, while having to book courts or finding fields to play in was always a hassle.

To stay in shape I would just run on the treadmill or go mountain biking outside, but I didn’t really push myself too much. Going to class and having instructors push me to progress has been a lot more encouraging when seeing the results to my fitness.

Attending a WeBarre Outdoors session with friends.

What’s it like going to classes as a man?

It’s always been fun coming to Barre claases, no matter if it’s only with a few good men, or with a group of girls. I started with a mate who is also male, and we were great there as supports for each other, especially when we couldn’t keep up with the girls in the class!

After a while, I also managed to pull along other guys and it’s always great to hit a class together. But even when it’s just me going solo, I just get in my zone and try to push myself as much as I can.

It can be a bit weird sometimes when the instructors yell out to “all the girls” or to “come on ladies”, but I’m always happy to be included in the fun!

How has Barre helped you in your training and fitness?

WeBarre has been great in helping me work on all those muscle groups, as well as mobility and strength. These facets of fitness aren’t directly addressed through my other workouts.

I’m getting more into spinning now as well. I feel that the balance of spin and Barre have given me the ability to have a more holistic exercise routine and work on different muscles to give myself rest days in between.

Ivan and Aileen attending the Halloween HIIT class at WeBarre Clarke Quay.

Should more men do Barre?

Absolutely. I would definitely encourage more guys to come to a WeBarre workout. It’s not for everyone, but then again, what exercise is? But I definitely would advise the guys not to be put off by any preconceptions of the class.

It’s always a friendly bunch, no matter whether it’s the guys or girls, and it’s always a great refreshing workout that I look forward to – especially the feeling when we are stretching after a tough class together!

By Joie Goh

If you’re a regular at WeBarre, you might’ve caught BFFs Ain and Ashikin attending classes together, often twinning in matching WeBarre outfits! Here, they share more about how attending classes together has deepened their decade-long friendship.

First Spark of Friendship

According to Ain and Ashikin, their first meeting was back in junior college, during a school competition.

“I met her in the toilet!” Ashikin recalls. “Like, the first time I met her was in the toilet!”

That one chance meeting has since matured into a deep friendship that has lasted more than 10 years.

Their WeBarre Journey Together

Ashikin started going to WeBarre after she gave birth, and attended a WeBarre Mums & Bubs class with her daughter Aishah.

“And I loved it! It was love at first barre,” she says. “And so then I got back and I told all my friends, oh my God! You have to start trying this thing! It’s new, it’s interesting. It’s not Pilates, it’s more than that.”

Ain was attending Pilates classes and boxing, and took Ashikin up on her offer. They began attending classes on Wednesdays at 5:45pm at Telok Ayer, and never stopped.

When the pandemic happened, they immediately switched to taking WeBarre Virtual classes because they wanted to keep up with their fitness journey once studios had reopened again.

“I guess with the virtual classes, it was a little easier for us to exercise, right,” Ain explains. “You just need to switch on your laptop.”

“Circuit breaker was when we saw each other everyday for WeBarre Virtual!” Ashikin adds.

Barre-dy Highlights

Last year, Ain contemplated attending the WeBarre Instructor Training.

“I was like, do I want to go for the training? Should I? Should I?” Ain says. “And Ashikin was like, ‘DO IT! It’s the best thing you will do for yourself this year!’”

When Ain completed her training, Ashikin was one of her first attendees at her Friends & Family class.

“According to Gretel, I was quite an ‘auntie’,” Ain confesses self-deprecatingly.

“It wasn’t the ‘clubbing’ Barre session for me,” Ashikin continues, laughing. “But so that Ain wouldn’t be embarrassed, I made sure that the two weeks before, I kept consistently going for Barre and making sure my form was on par!”

For the besties, their barre-dy friendship can be described as Ashikin always pushing Ain to take her Barre practice a step further, while Ain was encouraging Ashikin to stay consistent in her fitness journey.

A Barre-dy Retreat

“I attended the retreat in 2019 to Maldives and I really wanted Shikin to come down with me, but it was not meant to be,” Ain recalls.

“That’s right, because my daughter was 2 at that time and I couldn’t leave her,” Ashikin adds. “That’s why I didn’t go to Maldives with her, and to be honest, it was my biggest regret of my whole WeBarre journey!”

So, in July 2021, when WeBarre launched its first-ever WeBarre Retreat locally at W Singapore, the BFFs decided that they absolutely had to attend it together.

From left: Ain, instructor Joie, Ashikin.

“It really strengthened our friendship because when you ‘travel’ with another person, you’re stuck with them for 24/7 right?” Ashikin says. “And we didn’t drive each other crazy!”

Accountability Barre-dies

“I speak for the both of us when I say this: we probably wouldn’t be as consistent and wouldn’t go for Barre as often because we don’t have someone keeping us accountable, or cheering us on,” Ain says.

And it truly shows! The pair divulged that they share account details so that one or the other could help each other book for classes at noon, when the schedule is released, so they wouldn’t end up waitlisted for their favorite classes.

“Also I get quite comfortable when I’m exercising, but Ain is always pushing me to take the heavier weights or the more challenging options!” Ashikin adds.

Advice For Newbies

“Find a barre-dy!” Ashikin declares. “Find a barre-dy who encourages you, and who’s always there to keep cheering you on.”

“And a barre-dy who checks your form, makes sure you are doing the right pliés,” Ain continues.

And, gesturing to their matching Plié, Passé, Relevé, PARTAY tanks, they conclude: “And also encourages you to keep buying new merch!”

By Joie Goh

Fact: #barreburn is best experienced when it’s shared! Sit down with our WeBarre Virtual superstars Alicja & Priscillia, as they tell us about how logging in for their daily at-home Barre sessions led to their newly-forged bond as barre-dy besties.

How did you two meet and become friends?

Alicja & Pris: It all started on WeBarre Virtual. From what we can recall, a few of us would tend to stay back for the “after class chitchat” with the instructor. It was a natural progression from there. We don’t even remember how and when it happened. We were chatting on IG and ta-dah here we are today: from barre to the bar!

Clockwise from top left: Alicja, instructor Cherisa, Priscillia.

What are some highlights of your barre-dy friendship?

Alicja & Pris: We definitely have some wonderful and memorable moments. We timed & clocked our 500th class together (a very special one that coincided with Linda’s final class for a while). Excited to be getting stronger together and celebrating milestone achievements. We also completed 2 WeBarre On-Demand challenges. Another fun highlight of our barre-dy friendship was the recent WeBarre Retreat in October – we had only met in-person once or twice when we decided to share a room. Happy to be bestie barre-dies.

Winning the best dressed as twin black swans at the WeBarre Retreat!

Do you plan to attend classes together beforehand, or book in on your own and end up in classes together coincidentally?

Alicja & Pris: We know each others’ schedules and which classes the other one is doing. When Pris doesn’t have to be in the office, we tend to end up doing the same ones. Of course, there will be some days where we plan to attend classes beforehand, especially when we know that those days could be tougher and we want to be supportive.

Hanging out together outside of the barre.

Do you think your WeBarre journey would be different if you didn’t have your barredy? How would it be different?

Alicja & Pris: It’s simply nice to see same people come back over and over again. We get stronger together. The common factor is WeBarre; the rest is up to us. We definitely are looking forward to meeting up with a few other ladies after the New Year!

Got a wardrobe full of gorgeous new WeBarre apparel? Here are some laundry tips to keep them looking as good as new, wash after wash!

Turn them inside out

Keep the heat press laser printing on your activewear looking sharp by flipping your tops inside out before tossing them into the washing machine. This prevents them from peeling due to the excessive friction from your clothes tumbling around during the wash cycle.

Check the label for care instructions

Most activewear can be put in the regular wash cycle, but for items with super soft fabrics, such as the WeBarre Baby Tee, you’d be better off going with the delicate cycle. This way, it keeps them from losing their shape after repeated washes.

Use a laundry bag

Washing your activewear along with regular clothes? Pop them into a mesh laundry bag (after turning them inside out, of course) to keep them separate. Bonus: it also keeps your laundry organized when you have to fold them afterwards!

Avoid fabric softener

Fabric softener is wonderful to keep your clothes smelling fresh and feeling soft, but for your activewear? Not so much. Fabric softener contains polymers that keep towels and other items plush, but these same polymers will clog the fibres of your activewear and prevent the fabric from effectively wicking away your sweat. Save the softener for your everyday clothes, and use only clothing detergent for activewear. Besides, the buttery soft fabrics of your WeBarre apparel don’t need any extra care

Do you crave regularity or flexibility when it comes to working out? Are you a barre beginner or a bona-fide athlete? Whichever way you swing, WeBarre On Demand has got you covered!

Workout anytime, anywhere

Between WFH meetings, child care and the craziness of a stay-at-home lifestyle, we don’t always have the luxury to join a scheduled virtual class, let alone have an hour of undisturbed time! Got only 10 or 20 minutes to spare? Sneak in a quick but efficient targeted workout, like “Booty Burn with Pris” or “10 Minutes, 10 Exercises with Anabel”. Need a breather after a tense video conference call? Unwind with “Zoom Fatigue Stretch with Joie”. No matter what your situation, you can make it work!

Super-sculpt your body

A full-length WeBarre Virtual or in-studio class is usually all you need for a great workout, but sweat addicts, we’ve got you! Looking to challenge your arms or your core even more that day? Go ahead and top up your daily burn sesh with our blaster series! Or if you’re feeling extra sore and need a little more TLC and recovery, the On Demand catalogue has got you covered with our library of relaxing and rejuvenating stretch routines.

Spice up the burn with variety

Watching your carb and cholesterol intake? Here’s a simple recipe for an egg-free brunch entree that’s both tasty and full of plant-based proteins and fibre!

Ingredients

2 cups of any vegetables of your choice, diced (a mix of zucchini, bell peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, spinach and kale work well!)

1 tablespoon of olive oil

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves of garlic, finely minced

1 package of firm tofu

1 package of silken tofu

3 tablespoons of nutritional yeast

1 teaspoon yellow mustard

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon turmeric

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 180 deg Celsius.

Blend the firm and silken tofu in a blender or food processor along with the nutritional yeast, mustard, garlic powder, turmeric, salt and pepper until it forms a smooth paste. Set aside.

In a frying pan, heat up the olive oil. Stir fry the vegetables, onion and garlic until cooked and fragrant.

Remove the pan from heat. Add the blended tofu paste into the pan and mix thoroughly.

Transfer the mixture into an 8-inch springform cake tin. A regular round cake tin works as well – however, to prevent the frittata from sticking to the sides and falling apart when you remove it from the tin, do line the cake tin with baking paper.

Place the tin into the oven and bake for 45 mins, until the frittata is browned on top and firm to the touch.

Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 to 15 minutes.

Once cooled, remove the outer ring of the springform cake tin (or, if using a regular tin, gently loosen the frittata from the edges, place a large serving plate over the top and flip it over to remove).

Slice the frittata and serve with brunch!

By Novia Liew

Our virtual classes have allowed us to take this dream to your living room, keeping close to each other no matter what comes our way. If you’ve been on our virtual classes, you would’ve heard the familiar call from your instructors: “Turn on your videos, let me see your beautiful faces!” That’s because we do!

More importantly, we believe that having your camera on will change the way you workout from home. Here are 5 reasons why you should go ahead and click “start video”!

1. Brings you closer to your happy place

Yes, all you need for a workout is your props, your instructor on screen, and their instructions. But we can push ourselves beyond our limits when we work together as a community. You get to see your barre-dies power through the burn in the grids next to yours, and the love-hate smiles when your instructor cues to “pulse”. The high of getting through this together will bring fire not just to your quads, but to your hearts!

2. Holds you accountable to your workout

You know that moment in studio, when your instructor looks at you and you feel motivated to go a little deeper into the burn? On virtual, turning on your camera works the same magic. Knowing we’re always looking out and cheering you on, we guarantee you’ll feel the extra drive to fire up your moves. Don’t give yourself the excuse to go easy!

3. You get that personal touch

The best thing about turning your video on is that your instructors can see your movements and give you more targeted guidance to help you go deeper into your moves. Your instructor will become more than just a voice on the screen. Plus, you’ll get the same engagement and challenge as your studio workout.

4. You’re in a safe space

When you log into a virtual class, you’re entering a judgment-free zone. We don’t care if your room is messy or if you’re wearing your pajamas to work out! We just want to help you get the best out of your workout. Trust us – you’ll feel the difference!

5. It’s more fun!

Most importantly, keeping your videos means you can see your barre-dies reunited in one screen. Let loose and get a little playful — after all, we’re all here for some good fun! It’s also a great chance to have a little banter before or after classes, and show off your puppies or kitties or babies. Everyone needs a dose of cuteness in their lives!

Feeling motivated and ready to burn off your weekend indulgence, but daunted by the thought of an hour’s run under the sun? Skip the jog and just HIIT it instead! Here are 3 key reasons why you should incorporate HIIT workouts in your fitness routine.

1. Burns calories efficiently

45 minutes of HIIT burns just as much or even more calories than your regular hour-long WeBarre Signature Multi-level class! Because of the intensity, your body consumes more oxygen post-HIIT for recovery, so you continue burning more calories 2-3 hours after your workout. For those of you who are time-crunched and finding the most efficient ways to workout, this one’s for you!

2. Lowers blood pressure

With the combination of high intensity and rest periods in HIIT, you may find it easier to push yourself to your maximum. That means you’re making the most out of every second of your workout. Plus, this dual process of explosive movement and rest also helps reduce the stiffness of the artery walls, leading to a reduction in blood pressure. Over time, this can help to lower the resting heart rate, improving overall health, and reduce the chances of developing a heart condition.

3. Increases your metabolism

Due to the high intensity of the workout, HIIT can elevate your metabolism for hours after your workout. In addition, HIIT stimulates the production of your human growth hormone (HGH). HGH not only increases caloric burn, it also slows down the aging process. It’s a win-win!

At the barre, we often alternate aerobic and resistance exercises during our HIIT classes. You know how we love keeping you on your toes! So what are you waiting for? Feel the magic of HIIT for yourself and we’ll see you at the barre!

By Joie Goh

Reaching your 500 class milestone at WeBarre is no easy feat. But for Melissa Lim, another goal was in sight – getting to 500 classes by her 50th birthday! Here’s her inspiring story, and why when it comes to barre, age is just a number.

A familiar face at the barre, Melissa doesn’t fit the mold of what you think a “barre body” is. But, her confidence and ever-positive attitude shines in everything that she does! Looking at her, you might never think that she was the complete opposite when she first stepped into WeBarre.

“I was so intimidated when I came in for my first class!” Melissa says, laughing. “Everyone was so slim, and toned, and sculpted. And here I was, bigger-sized, older, and have not exercised at all!”

The year was 2017 and Melissa was 46. Staying healthy and fit became a priority for her, so upon the recommendation of a friend, she decided to try out WeBarre. “Wow, after the first trial class, I ached for the next 2-3 days!” she reminisced. “In the end, I could only do 2 classes during the trial period.”

In fact, even going back for the 2nd trial class almost didn’t happen. “I used to have a very negative body image,” Melissa says. “I tend to see my body as bigger than it really is, and after comparing myself to everyone else at the studio, I really didn’t want to come back.”

A Hidden Hero

Her push to return to the barre came from someone dearest to her – her husband. When he saw Melissa defeated after her first class at WeBarre, he gave her the encouragement and support she needed.

“My husband reminded me that all bodies are different,” she says. “He told me not to give up so quickly and to go back and try again. After all, I really did enjoy my time in the studio – even though the instructors were all so slim and good at barre, they were so encouraging. I’m really thankful.”

Diligently showing up at the barre eventually led to self-acceptance. “My body image is my personal challenge that I knew I had to overcome,” Melissa says. “I started to accept myself and to love my body, and when I did, I began to see the physical changes in me. And it’s all WeBarre – I don’t do any other form of exercise!”

The Power of Barre-dies

Another factor that Melissa credits for keeping her going is making friends at the barre. “The more I came for classes, the more I got to know others who also come to WeBarre, and I became quite close to some of them,” Melissa says. “We actually have a chat group to keep each other accountable!”

In this chat group, Melissa and her barre-dies would tell each other when they would be attending classes. By announcing that they have signed up for a class, it makes them less inclined to cancel at the last minute, explains Melissa.

A Sense of Accomplishment

Still, the biggest factor to her 500-class success comes from within. “The moment I step into the studio after a hard day of work, everything flies away and once the class is over, I feel so good for completing that one hour,” Melissa says. “It’s wonderful!”

It’s also this feeling of pride that Melissa says is unbeatable. “If anyone tells me that they are too old, too unfit to do barre, I’ll tell them: look at me!” she says, beaming with self-esteem. “If I, at 50 years old and not the fittest person, could do this 500 times and counting, well, so can you!”
